Our first day (Annabelle&Thilde from France)

      Åland´s flag

We arrived to Marihamn yesterday at 23 o´clock (22´ in Sweden).
Today we could visit the town by feet or with bicycles (every volunteer has a bicycle lent by emmaus).
We walked to the beach called "Nabben" and saw beautiful red wood houses which are actually boat-shelters.
Then we went down to the sea quarter where there are some shops, galleries and a museum. It is the place where we are going to commemmorate Hiroshima Day on Saturday.
During the day, Frans was picking up some other volunteers from Ukraine, England, Peru and Finland.
What we saw of Mariehamn is lovely, very peacefull, and doesn´t look like french landscapes.
We had a warm day, with sun and wind; we were lucky.

All of us went to Emmaus´place to meet Robert and Carina, to introduce ourselves and to have informations about Emmaus in Åland.
We ate Carina´s vegetables at the Youth Café and visited the workshops and the shops.

Tomorrow, we will work with Sofia (recycling workshop).

We were surprised by :
- Not meeting many turists (empty beaches). Calm of the town.
- Warmth and the early sunrise!
- Cars that stop when we cross the road by bicycles. In France you need to wait a while before someone let you cross the road.
- Windows that open toward the outside.
- The jet lag.

We can´t wait to begin to work and discover Åland.
Pictures are coming soon.

We are ready

The camp preparations are pretty much finished by now. The Tvärsan house is set to order and we have loads of work and other program for you to do.
The first participants will arrive already tomorrow.
What is left to do is to drive a boat that we can use to the closest harbour(about 10 min from tvärsan) and buy food. Other than that we are ready and we are looking forward to a great camp!

The official camp blog

This is the official blog of the 2011 Emmaus Åland summer work camp. In this blog all of the participants will get to take turns in sharing their impressions of the camp in both words and pictures.

I will start with writing about the camp preparations for you. During this week the Tvärsan house where the participants will all stay is to be prepared with beds, bicycles is to be repaired and checked so that there will be one for every participant, an infromation folder about Åland is to be prepared and so on. It is going to be a busy week.

To get a sense of how the camp will be you can read last years blog:

I will come back to you with more information on the preparations later today.
